Your First Visit
Visiting an orthodontist for the first time can be both exciting and a little nerve-wracking, especially if you’ve been dreaming about improving your smile. At Edmonds Orthodontics, we’re always thrilled to welcome new patients and find the best orthodontic solutions for them.
During your first visit we will give you the opportunity to meet our team, learn more about orthodontics, receive a complete initial exam, and find out which treatment options will best meet your needs. Multiple treatment options are available, including braces that are custom made for your smile, and Invisalign.
Each member of our team has been with the practice for several years and recognizes that each person who walks through the door is a new family member. We take the time to make them feel comfortable and well informed.
Here’s What Will Happen at the Exam
As part of the initial examination, you can expect a comprehensive assessment of your mouth. The purpose is to evaluate the alignment of your teeth and jaws and determine if they are in the correct positions. It is generally recommended that patients have their first examination by the age of seven, as this allows your orthodontist to assess their current oral health and make predictions about their future dental development. Early intervention can sometimes be beneficial in aligning the teeth and jaws properly, potentially reducing the need for extensive orthodontic work in the future. Regardless of your age, the examination will provide our team with valuable information to assess if orthodontic treatment can help you.
In addition to the examination, diagnostic tests such as X-rays, photos, or impressions are typically performed during the first visit. These tests provide a more detailed view of your oral health, including the development of teeth, the condition of the jawbone, and other important factors. By obtaining a comprehensive picture of your oral health, we can develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
Discussing Your Options
Next, it’s time to let you know if you have issues that can be corrected with orthodontic treatment. If so, treatment might be recommended immediately or delayed based on the developmental stage of your teeth and jaws. All of the treatment options will be presented, and you’ll be able to have a full understanding of them before deciding how to proceed.
At this stage, it is important to ask any questions you may have to gain confidence in your orthodontic care. Here are some common questions you might consider asking during your first visit:
- When should treatment begin?
- What procedures might be necessary?
- Do I need any tooth extractions?
- How long will the treatment take?
- What will be the cost of the treatment, and what are the payment options?
- What are the office policies I should expect during my treatment?
Our team will be glad to answer any questions you may have, and we will provide all of the information that you need to determine which treatment is right for you.
Kids Club
As an orthodontic office focused on prevention, we align with the recommendations from the American Association of Orthodontists, which recommends that every child receive an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven.
After our complimentary consultation, if no treatment is recommended, your child is eligible to join our complimentary Kids Club. Drs. Kim and Ohara will then closely monitor your child’s jaw growth and dental development until the optimal timing for their orthodontic treatment.
What Our Complimentary Kids Club Offers
- Enables us to monitor a child’s development with periodic six-month examinations at no charge.
- Early interception of abnormalities to guide facial growth and dental eruptions.
- Minimizes future extensive and lengthy treatment.
- Achieves results that would be unattainable if jaw growth is already complete before treatment.
- Enables us to support patients’ general dental care with a team approach, including ongoing communication with their dentist.
- Allows parents to prepare and plan for the cost of treatment and organize enhanced orthodontic insurance coverage if needed.
- A previous treatment courtesy of 10% will be offered to you when patients are ready to begin their second phase of orthodontic treatment.
